Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook claimed that his team fully deserved the 1-0 win over MK Dons in the opening game of the season.
However, MK Dons could not capitalise on the advantage as they were also reduced to 10 men following Scott Wootton’s red card in the 58th minute. Cook claimed that the away team were able to create more opportunities and fully deserved the victory. The opening game being on the road was not a confidence inspiring element for Wigan, but they were able to transform this into a positive element by beating MK Dons.
Cook later claimed that it was an important victory since MK Dons are one of the top teams especially at home. He also stressed the importance of starting the season with a victory in order to be with confidence throughout the season. The club are up against Blackpool in the next league match.
“We created more than enough chances to win the game. Make no mistake, MK Dons are a very good side, and they’re going to be up there in the shake-up. We’re pleased with the result, but more importantly we’re pleased with the performance. When the fixtures come out, everyone wants to get off the mark with a win. We’ll have a good trip home, and we’ll be ready for Blackpool on Tuesday and Bury next weekend,” said Cook.
