Posted on December 17, 2021 in WAFC

Wigan Athletic suffered demotion from the English Championship two seasons after they had points deducted for going into administration. The Latics thenfinished just above the relegation last season as they narrowly missed out on demotion to League Two football. The Lyrics have been able to assemble a star-studded squad for a League One team and they are on course to seal promotion to the English Championship at the end of this season as predicted before the current season started in August. As things stand in League One football, Wigan Athletic are second on the league table and they have the same points (41) as Rotherham United in first place and Wycombe Wanderers in third place. The Latics have played one more game than league leaders Rotherham United and two more games than Wycombe Wanderers.

League One summit recipients Rotherham United and Wycombe Wanderers are in League One this season after their relegation from the Championship last season. Sheffield Wednesday were the other team who suffered demotion from the Championship last season and they are in eighth spot at the moment.

As pointed out earlier, Wigan bossLeamRichardson hasa squad of  quality players at his disposal. These players include James McLean, Charlie Wyke,Gwion Edwards, Max Power and many more.

Some Wigan Athletic players are facing an uncertain future ahead of the winter transfer window and they could leave the club when it opens in the next three weeks. 20-year-old fullback Luke Robinson came through the Wigan Athletic youth team before he made his first team bow. Robinson could leave the Latics in search of more first team opportunities. With the presence of Tom Pearce and return to full fitness of Joe Bennett, Robinson has seen little playing time for Wigan this season.

Young Wigan Athletic defender James Carragher is the son of Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher and he could also leave the Latics with clubs such as Everton and Rangers keen on him.
