Cook not happy with referee’s decision-making

Posted on December 3, 2018 in Wigan News

Paul Cook didn’t seem to be happy about the fact that Harry Wilson, the Derby County winger, was not booked for the second time when he deliberately fell down inside the box without being touched by any opposition player in the game against Wigan.

Cook reckons that it was a foul and it deserved a yellow card which would have resulted in Wilson leaving the pitch as he had already been booked once before in the game. (more…)

Paul Cook admits massive disappointment after Preston North End defeat

Posted on October 16, 2018 in WAFC

Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook has admitted massive disappointment after his team were humbled by a 4-0 scoreline on the road to Preston North End. The Latics had a comfortable beginning on their Championship return which saw them 17 points from their opening 11 matches but they could not match up to the challenge offered from Preston.

Speaking after the gruelling defeat, Cook said that he had experienced one of his worst days managing the club but they need to overcome such situations to overcome the drop, he quipped: “When you’re managing a club like I am and you start with our aspirations, along the way you’re going to get massive disappointments and this is probably the biggest disappointment I’ve had since I started managing the club. If you’re looking at Wigan Athletic, the reason we are sitting where we are in the league is because we’ve had good days and I think that’s massively important. I’m not one of these who comes and apologises to fans because for me as a supporter myself, you have massive disappointments.”

Kris Boyd urges Rangers to bolster the frontline after Josh Windass exit

Posted on September 10, 2018 in WAFC

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd believes the Gers should add more bodies in the forward department after they sanctioned the surprise exit of Josh Windass last week. The 24-year-old had a strong 2017/18 season with the Gers where he contributed 18 goals and this made him a regular fixture under new manager Steven Gerrard this term.

Despite this, the Glasgow giants sanctioned his departure before the English transfer deadline after Wigan Athletic agreed on a £2m fee for his signature. In a report covered by The Record, Boyd admitted that he was not surprised by the exit of Windass, who had largely played out of position during his time at the Ibrox Stadium.

Paul Cook Determined To Seal League One Title With Wigan Athletic

Posted on June 10, 2018 in Wigan News

Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook remains determined to seal the League One title next week after being held to a 1-1 draw by AFC Wimbledon in the penultimate game of the season. The Latics had the opportunity to lift the title after second-placed Blackburn Rovers succumbed to an away defeat to Charlton Athletic, but it wasn’t to be.

Speaking after the game, he said:”I can’t grumble, we didn’t play well in the first half. It’s tough these days, you get over the line and promoted and there’s a sense of achievement, but there’s so much more to play for. We created numerous chances and the keeper made a couple of great saves, any other day we would have won the game. We can have a good rest this week and put everything into our preparations to make sure we finish the season with a smile.” (more…)

Wigan Athletic Boss Believes Club Have Lost Their Mojo

Posted on April 25, 2018 in Wigan News

Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook believes his side have lost a little bit of their mojo after conceding three goals during their recent League One draw against Scunthorpe United. The Latics took the lead on two occasions during the first-half through Chey Dunkley and Will Grigg, but they were pegged back by a Tom Hopper brace prior to the break.

Following the interval, the home side found themselves behind after Ivan Toney’s 53rd-minute effort, but substitute Gary Roberts ensured that Wigan levelled the scores three minutes from time. After shipping just 13 goals in the first 28 games on the league campaign, the Latics have now let in 10 in the space of just five games, which Cook is worried about.

David Moyes stresses Wigan Athletic defeat was not a shock

Posted on March 23, 2018 in WAFC Wigan News

West Ham United manager David Moyes has stressed that the Hammers’ FA Cup fourth round exit versus Wigan Athletic may not be considered as an upset as the club only had a scattering of their Premier League players. The east London outfit were without the services of Andy Carroll, Marko Arnautovic, Mark Noble and Manuel Lanzini, and this cost them dearly as they bowed out of the Cup competition with a 2-0 defeat at the DW Stadium.

Speaking after the game, he said: “People shouldn’t be maybe that surprised because if you look at the team we played, I don’t think our team is necessarily a Premier League team. I think we had a scattering of Premier League players. Then we had young players, who’re on their way to trying to become good footballers. Maybe some of them, in time, will go on to be top Premier League players, but at this point in time it’s not the case.”

Wigan Go Top of the Table with Rotherham Win

Posted on January 26, 2018 in Wigan News

Wigan Athletic were able to go top of the League One after managing a 3-1 victory over Rotherham. Paul Cook’s team came into the game after having the chance to top the table even at this early stage in the season. They had a comfortable victory in the end. Will Grigg provided the opening goal in the 14th minute, but Wigan did not have the lead for long as David Ball came up with an equaliser after just two minutes. However, Wigan’s dominance in the game was clear when they responded through several crosses. It ultimately led to the goal from Alex Bruce in the 28th minute.

This was a key goal and it probably ended the resistance of Rotherham, who were under heavy pressure from the Latics for much of the game. The away team were able to get a decisive lead in the game when Jacobs came up with the third goal of the evening in the 60th minute. The two-goal advantage proving too big for the home team. Wigan ended up having only 11 shots on goal against the 15 from Rotherham, but the away team were clearly the winners when it came to accuracy. Wigan had an excellent five shots on target compared to just two from Rotherham.
